Southern Living Reports on our Efforts
We were blessed to be the lead subject of Southern Living’s article about how small country stores are often the hub of recovery efforts after a disaster. Our store The Davis Country Store & Cafe was the central location of the begining of recovery efforts, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner for free to the community and first responders for 3 weeks right after the hurricane hit.
Before Old Fort, North Carolina was able to fully take in the catastrophic damage to its town after Hurricane Helene, Amy Davis made sure there would be hot coffee and biscuits. Her business, The Davis Country Store & Cafe, had made it through the storm, so she made it her mission to feed as many first responders and people in need as possible. “We started with just biscuits, but as the community began bringing us what they had in their freezers and fridges, we were able to make lunch, and then dinner. By Tuesday our little store and cafe was filled with ice chests full of meats, dairy products, produce, and frozen meals,” she wrote in a recent GoFundMe post. “We feed approx 600 people a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And we are feeding them well, not disaster food. We are trying to keep home feeling like home.”
