McDowell County Closes its Shelters with Winter Weather Looming

Winter Camping was not what our residents had planned, but many will face as a reality this season if we can’t get them into a Relief Cabin.

We were alerted today that McDowell County is officially closing its 3 shelters it had in place. With winter weather coming, and an expectation of a very harsh season, the unhoused are looking at a VERY difficult time staying safe and warm. The need for immediate shelter, especially flexible shelter that conforms to THEIR needs (ie; staying on their property to guard mineral and mining rights or farm animals, staying in a town near their job, overseeing rebuilding of their home, etc.) is high. We can’t sit idly by while families face sleeping in below freezing temps just to keep their livelihood going or their property safe. Please consider donating to help us house the unhoused while they rebuild.
